Respiratory Illnesses Due To The Increase In Air Pollution

The rigorous urbanization, upgrade in lifestyles, and quality of living has affected the surroundings of our country in the most detrimental manner.1 Approximately 4.2 million people die each year due to stroke, heart disease, and lung cancer caused by ambient air pollution..2 And, around 91% people across the world live at destinations where the air quality exceeds the prescribed limit by WHO).2 In fact, out of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, 21 exist in India. As per a 2018 report by The Financial Times, more than 4 out of every 10 people in India are breathing more than the 5 times the safe limit of particulate matter.3

As a result, air pollution poses a major health related challenge today  for the citizens of India. In a more recent study carried out by CNN Health, 21 out of the 30 most polluted cities were identified to exist in India.

In fact, a leading surgeon in one of the New Delhi Hospital states that at the beginning of his career all his patients except smokers had healthy and pink lungs. However, due to the exponential rise in air pollution levels in the recent years pink lungs in patients has become a rare sight. The even scarier fact is that children aged as young 14 years without any history of smoking have also been found to have black deposits in the lungs.

Kids are relatively more susceptible to the effects of air pollution as they have low immunity, spend longer hours being outdoors, and indulge in regular vigorous activities. Also, as their lungs keep developing until long after birth. Hence, they breathe in a great deal of air pollutants than the adult population.A global study on effects of air pollution found that nearly 116,000 infants in India were killed within the first month of birth due to the rising levels of air pollution. Afurther detailed study by Down To Earth shows that air pollution led to death of 535 children daily on an average in the year 2017.

The side effects can include lower respiratory tract infections, lung diseases, premature birth, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, altered immunity, vitamin-D deficiency (rickets), low birth weight, and sudden infant death syndrome.

For children, the side effects of air pollution begin right from the womb and last through the early childhood stages. The respiratory systems in children are the most affected by air pollutants. They often lead to diverse acute as well as chronic disorders with single or combined risk factors. The commonly reported disorders in children resulting from air pollution are:

  1. Upper and Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  2. Lung Diseases
  3. Premature Birth
  4. Vitamin-D Deficiency (Rickets)
  5. Low Birth Weight
  6. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases
  7. Altered Immunity
  8. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
  9. Otitis Media With Effusion
  10. Tuberculosis
  11. Acute Pulmonary Haemorrhage
  12. Pneumonia
  13. Bronchiectasis
  14. Asthma
  15. Bronchospasm
  16. Allergies

Dr. Krishnamurthy, HOD of Gandhi Hospital states that asthma cases in the pediatric segment have risen by 10-15% in the last decade. In fact, WHO cites air pollution as one the leading threats to child health and the cause of 1 in 10 deaths in children under 5 years of age.

Since, air pollution is such a big healthcare challenge for both adults and children, we can ofcourse do our bit in keeping the problem at bay. Fortunately, there are some measures that we all can readily adopt to fight respiratory disorders and other allergies.

Remedies To Combat Respiratory Disorders

Here are some remedies that you and your child can adopt to deal with respiratory disorders resulting from air pollution:

  1. Installing Air Purifiers – These are electronic and portable machines that can be installed in any corner of your home or office. Alternatively, you can just carry them along with you on the move. Air purifiers also known as air cleaners or sanitizers do their job by cleaning the air of molds, dust, pollens, and other tiny suspended particles.
  2. Installing  Plants – In a NASA experiment carried out in 1989, it was discovered that some plants can indeed cleanse volatile organic compounds from the air. In an experiment carried out later, scientists found out that microorganisms in plants help in the purification of air. So, you can install plants such as English Ivy, Barberton Daisy, Chrysanthemum, Spider Plant, Aloe Vera, etc. to keep the air inside your home clean and pure.
  3. Wearing Masks – Try to reduce your time being spent outdoors. Whenever you step out, make sure to wear a N-95 face mask that is certified by the U.S. National Institute For Occupational Safety And Health as the best in grade with regards to air particle filtration.
  4. Exercising Regularly – Exercise causes the heart and lungs to pump oxygen additional oxygen to your muscles. Exercising also helps in clearing the sputum out of your lungs thus helping the airway to remain clean.

Although our bodies are designed to naturally defend our lungs, some efforts are also needed on our part to take care of them. Hence, shared above were a few hacks which if followed regularly can help you keep respiratory disorders at bay. These methods can minimize the amount of air pollutants in your surroundings and allow you to stay healthy.

However, in the case of some respiratory disorders such as COPD, Asthma, Obstructive Lung Disorders, Cystic Fibrosis, and Pulmonary Infectious Diseases, the above-mentioned methods may not be effective at all.

Metered Dose Inhalers and Their Limitations

MDIs or Metered Dose Inhalers are used to treat asthma, COPD, etc. through aerosol drug delivery. Though they are considered to be the most advanced alternatives in their league, there are some challenges that come attached with this device specifically for the pediatric population.

Coordination seems one of the most prominent challenges that users (especially children) face. For effective usage, an individual needs to coordinate his/her deep breathing with the pushing motion that expels the medicine. This may sound simple in theory, however,  children may not always manage to do this perfectly. In fact, researchers in the U.S. have found that around 97% kids do not know how to use a MDI in a proper and effective manner. Also, people with physical disabilities or limited hand movement largely struggle with the use of MDIs

Dosage Counting with MDI is also a challenge as there is no way for the user to accurately predict how much dosage is actually left inside the inhaler. Although patients are usually careful with replacements, this challenge can transform into a dire situation on unfateful days.

These are two of the main and many challenges that users of MDIs have to encounter. Fortunately, there is a safer, more efficacious, and convenient alternative available.

Nebulizer – A Convenient Alternative to Keep Respiratory Disorders At Bay

A nebulizer is used for quick and direct administration of medication into the lungs of the patient suffering from severe respiratory disorders such as COPD, Cystic Fibrosis, Asthma, etc.

It works by atomizing the medication into a very mist that can be inhaled by the patients through a mask or a mouthpiece.

Unlike a MDI, a nebulizer doesn’t require forceful breathing or any special coordination skills, making the device convenient for use especially by the pediatric segment. Also, since they come in compact shapes and sizes these days, kids can handle them very easily plus they can be used on-the-go.  Using a nebulizer is as convenient as breathing as it only needs a patient to sit, measure the medication, attach the mouthpiece, inhale, and exhale. Since, the medication directly reaches the lungs, users get swift relief from the symptoms of their respiratory disorder

Common bronchodilators such as Albuterol used for treating the inflammation in the airway starts to show effect within 5 minutes of beginning the nebulization therapy. However, if ingested orally it may take as long as up to 30 minutes. So, if you are having trouble breathing, using a nebulizer can offer you relief much more quickly.

Pediatricians recommend parents to use modern day nebulizers for offering their children relief from various air-borne allergies. Hence, parents should store a compact and handy set of nebulizer at their homes. Omron Nebulizer fit the tag perfectly.
