What does blood pressure readings tell you?

Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. An estimated 1.5 billion worldwide adults are either overweight or obese, which You can expect to increase to 3 billion by 2030. A study conducted in 2019 found that one out of every four people in India is overweight and the prevalence of obesity in India is 40.3%. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), being overweight or obese raises one’s chances of developing potentially fatal non-communicable diseases.

The sharp and worrisome increase suggests this issue needs immediate attention. Having to deal with the complications and difficulties brought on by being overweight is a new and challenging frontier. Usually, obesity gets linked to chronic diseases like Hypertension (High blood pressure), diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and arthritis.

The BMI scale the standard metric that measures weight for height that classifies individuals by weight status. It is calculated by dividing a person’s weight by their height in square meters (kg/m2).  A recent study suggests that the numbers from BMI scale can be convenient for large sample sizes but does not differentiate between lean and fat mass, while the fat mass diminishes with age. This metric is not accurate body composition analyzer to picture a person’s body composition. Fat and lean mass are added together without being separated when using weight as a measurement.

Suppose you exercise twice a week and see if you have any results on losing weight, mainly whether you are losing fat or gaining. A Body Composition Monitor (BCM) tells you so much more than just the weight.

A BCM is an advanced form of a conventional bathroom scale that also gives the user an estimate of their overall physical fitness. Fat percentage, muscle percentage, resting metabolic rate and body age are some of the common indicators of overall body composition.

BCM employ Bioelectrical impedance Analysis (BIA) for estimating body composition, body fat and muscle mass. Omron has a wide range of Body composition monitors that evaluate body fat percentage by calculating resistance.

It is impossible to distinguish between fat and lean mass when using weight alone as a metric of body composition. As a result, patients may be improperly classified based on BMI. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that BMI was an incorrect indicator for 18% of the US population. Even while the study found a significant association between BMI and body fat, it found an even stronger correlation between BMI and lean body mass.

Body fat, also known as fatty tissues or fat mass, gets divided into two categories:

  • Essential Fat: Fat is necessary for bodily processes. Women require between 5% and 10% body fat for optimal health, whereas men require only 2-5%
  • Non-essential Fat: This fat does not need to perform essential functions. It provides insulation and protects vital organs.

Body fat percentage refers to the amount of body fat mass regarding the total body weight expressed as a percentage. Our Omron BCM uses the BI method to estimate the fit rate. Depending on the location of the fat, it gets classified as visceral or subcutaneous fat.

Visceral Fat

It is also known as stubborn belly fat, which includes the liver, kidneys, pancreas, intestines and heart. High visceral fat gets linked to an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even some malignancies. Because of the muscle-building effects of healthy behaviors like exercise, weight gain or maintenance may occur despite a reduction in body fat and an improvement in body composition if muscle mass has increased.

If Visceral fat is between,

  • 0.5-9.5- Normal
  • 10-14.5-High
  • 15-30-Very high

Our range of Omron BCM is easy-to-use and convenient for managing weight at home. OMRON’s 4-point full body sensing technology provides a more accurate and precise body composition measurement.

Wrap-Up:

Thus, using a BCM helps you maintain and watch your weight when you know Your body composition and plan your workout and lifestyle changes.
