How do nebulizer help wade off the flu?

Nebulizers are medical devices that are used to deliver medication in the form of a fine mist that can be inhaled into the lungs. They are commonly used to treat respiratory conditions, including the Asthma, COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) & flu etc.

The flu, also known as influenza, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. It spreads from person to person and can cause symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, and fatigue.[1]

Common flu symptoms include fever or feeling feverish/chills, aching muscles, chills and sweats, headaches, dry, persistent cough, shortness of breath, tiredness and weakness, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and sometimes stomach symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Most symptoms go away in 4 to 7 days, but cough and fatigue can persist for several weeks.

Some people are at higher risk of developing complications from the flu, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinus and ear infections. These groups include young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with certain medical conditions. Children younger than five years, especially under age 2, are at the greatest risk for serious flu complications. Adults aged 65 years and older are also at greater risk of flu-related complications, partly because of decreasing immune function. People with certain medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and weakened immune systems, are at higher risk of developing flu-related complications. These high-risk groups need to take extra precautions to prevent the flu.[2]

While the flu can be a debilitating illness, by delivering the prescribed medication directly to the lungs, nebulizers can be helpful in alleviating some of its symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and other symptoms associated with the flu.

Nebulizer allows the medication to act more quickly and effectively in relieving flu symptoms. The following are some ways in which a nebulizer can help with the flu:[3]

  • Relieve coughing: Can help to open up the airways and relieve coughing.
  • Reduce nasal congestion: Decongestants can help to reduce nasal congestion and relieve a stuffy nose.
  • Alleviate wheezing: Relieve wheezing and breathing difficulties.
  • Shorten the duration of the flu: Help to shorten the duration of the flu and reduce its severity with effective delivery of prescribed medications.

OMRON nebulizers are portable and easy to use, making them a convenient option for treating flu symptoms at home.

Here is a step-by-step guide for using an OMRON nebulizer for flu treatment:
  • Prepare the medication: Fill the nebulizer cup with the prescribed medication according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure the medication is at room temperature before use.
  • Assemble the nebulizer: Attach the mouthpiece or face mask to the top of the nebulizer cup. Connect the nebulizer cup to the air compressor.
  • Turn on the nebulizer: Turn on the air compressor to start the nebulization process.
  • Inhale the medication: Hold the mouthpiece in your mouth or place the face mask over your nose and mouth. Breathe normally and deeply while the medication is being nebulized.
  • Complete the treatment: Continue to inhale the medication until the entire dose has been delivered, usually about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Clean the nebulizer: Disassemble the nebulizer and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This is important to prevent the buildup of bacteria and other contaminants that could cause infection.[4]

It’s important to follow the instructions of a healthcare provider when using a nebulizer for flu treatment. The frequency and duration of nebulizer treatment will depend on the severity of the flu symptoms and the specific medications being used.
